Wooden playhouses are an item that spruces up your backyard and makes it much more enjoyable for your children to play in. This is a backyard accessory that can be a place of refuge for kids to play in on a rainy day. If you’re thinking of getting one for your kids there are three ways to go about it. You can build one yourself if you are so inclined or buy a fully finished unit and lastly there are playhouse kits to assemble. Building one yourself would be quite an undertaking and it would be recommended that you have some carpentry skills and tools to do the job. You will save money but it will take some time. And we all know how many times you’re going to get asked “Is it ready yet?”
A kit on the other hand is probably the best of both worlds where you don’t have to design it and only need basic tools to assemble it. Usually this can be done on a weekend. If you’re children are old enough it might be fun to have them help in little ways, to make it feel to them like they had a part in it. If it’s possible a solid base made of a slab of concrete or at least concrete patio slabs is a good idea to build it on, so the base area doesn’t rot over time.
Like any real house you may need to put a good coating of paint on it. If you want to have a fairly trouble free type paint I recommend deck stain. Believe me when I say it is the absolute best stuff for any playhouse or regular house. I don’t know why they call it deck stain because it looks like paint to me. It comes in any color you want and just rolls or brushes on like normal paint. The great thing about it is it never peels like regular paint so there is virtually no big maintenance to it. It lasts for years with out any problems. Another good thing to do to protect wooden playhouses is to sprinkle a powder called borax powder around the outside. This keeps ants away from nesting in it or around it. They hate the stuff and it’s basically a non issue for humans but toxic to ants. A few generations back borax was used to clean and disinfect cuts and scraps on kids. You can get the powder at your local pharmacy. 
So if you have kids and want a place they will enjoy then go out and get one, buy a kit, or make one your self and create more backyard adventures and memories!
