Tiki torches have become a fan favorite for many homeowners in the US. These simple yet fun decorations fly off the shelves of many home improvement and department stores across the country.
Most people think of just the traditional bamboo tiki torch when they think about these items but there are many more available to choose from. The following are some other options that many people do not know exist.
Solar
Solar tiki torches get their power supply from the sun. During the day they charge and can be set so that at night an automatic timer turns them on.
Not only are these items “green friendly” but they look amazing when you line them up at the edge of your front walkway. For 2011 they are fast becoming the rage, especially in the Pacific Northwest.
Gas
Gas powered tiki torches are run on propane. You hook them up and they burn until the propane gas is gone. This is a nice option but the propane can be expensive to buy every time you want to run your torch.
Electric
Many people choose electric tiki torches for long term placement. You have to schedule an electrician to set these up. Once they are installed you can turn on your tiki torches, in the front or backyard, with the flip of a switch on the inside. Keep in mind, though, that the wiring leading to them needs to be covered to protect against the rain and elements.
Citronella Filled Torches
If you have a traditional tiki torch then you need to fill its canister with citronella oil. Not only does it emit a soothing smell of the forest but it will repel mosquitoes. This is the same substance used in bug spray. Having an outdoor diner? a party? maybe a bar-b-q? Then have a few bamboo tiki torches around the perimeter burning citronella will make every one’s life more enjoyable.
Some other options for include ceramic, plastic and stainless steel tiki torches. The colors and sizes you can get them in are endless. Whatever option you decide to go with make sure to buy them in the winter or spring. As stated when summertime comes everyone starts thinking about Hawaiian luau parties and backyard gatherings. Specialty outdoor tropical decor is a lot harder to come by between late May and September because everyone wants it. You will have a hard time finding them at that point. Start early and avoid the rush.
