Buying Petrol Hedge Trimmers

Yard maintenance is an ever ongoing job and one of those backyard adventures that is easier if you have the right kind of tools.

A petrol hedge trimmer is one of those tools that you need if you have bushes or hedges to keep in good shape.  Some people really get into shaping bushes in many different shapes like castle walls for example, or a round dome.  Electric hedge trimmers always have the disadvantage of having to be hooked up to an extension cord for power.  A petrol powered one is totally free to move about with no dangling cord to worry about cutting and getting a shock off of, or fighting with the cord all the time trying to keep it plugged in as you cut.  I had an electric one for a few years and just couldn’t put up with that frustration any more.

When I went shopping for a good petrol hedge trimmer I wanted one that was light weight yet powerful enough to do the job nicely.  I also needed one that had a decent length blade because the hedges I have are wide.  I eventually chose a husqvarna 22.5 cc machine with 23.6 inch cutting blades.  It weighs in at 11.5 lbs and that was about as much weight as I wanted to have to manoeuvre with.  The other thing I liked is it was easy to start which goes a long way for me.  I’ve heard many stories of hard to start machines that wear you out before you get started on trimming the hedge because you’ve spent all your energy attempting to start the darn thing.  I also have a husqvarna chain saw that I’ve never had an issue with so I thought I’d stick with a manufacturer I had first hand experience with.   The unit also has ergonomic handles to help the operator do the job.  The machine is also rated to cut up to .6 inch branches.  It is a decently powered trimmer.

With these types of hedge cutters you should always climb up on something such as a ladder or structure that puts you above the bush or hedge so you aren’t reaching high up and having debris come falling down on you.  Also clean the whole petrol hedge trimmer every time you are done with it.  I use pressurized air to blow out the engine crevices and all the confined areas as well as the blade.  A good idea is to spray the blade with some cutting oil after each use to lubricate it and keep it from rusting.  Always store the unit flat so the gasoline or oil doesn’t drip out or leach into parts of the engine that it shouldn’t, and put the blade guard on.
