Backyard Lighting is one of the most neglected items that people tend to leave as a low priority until they either get hurt stumbling over something in the dark, or worst yet someone breaks into their garage or home. It is a project that will positively impact a home and increase it’s value. I urge you to make this backyard adventure a priority. Backyard lighting installed correctly will deter most criminals as well as small nocturnal animals like skunks and racoons. There are two main categories of possible lighting available. Low voltage lighting such as solar spotlights or regular wall outlet powered types that would likely be used for deck lights, or places where wall outlets exist.
Back yard lighting design can incorporate decorative solar lanterns, garden lights that show off a beautiful flower garden, or perhaps patio lights to enhance your patio.
No matter what kinds of yard lighting you choose always make sure you have the proper kind that are safe to use and approved by Underwriters Laboratory (UL), and or Canadian Standards Association (CSA). All lights will be labelled when bought new at a store, otherwise consider them unsafe to use. If you aren’t familiar with wiring up a 120 volt light I’d recommend you get a licensed electrician to do the job. Pay particular attention to this for the high voltage types. You don’t want someone to get electrocuted in your backyard. Keep in mind if you use self charging solar lanterns or other portable types that you place them in positions where the built in solar cells will be exposed to sunlight for at least 4 or 5 hours during the daytime. Overhanging tree branches, fence panels or other objects can create shadows and prematurely wear out the battery inside the light.
Another sub category to the solar type of illumination is led lights. You can actually get led grow lights that give your garden extra exposure to simulated sunlight which help your plants grow faster and better. You will need the wall outlet power for this type of system.
One of the biggest advantages to illuminating your back yard is the amount of extra time you can spend their. Late night parties are possible or even a backyard wedding that can extend the reception into the late hours of the night. This is a great backyard adventure project!
